Interesting. Can they gain levels? What about multi-classing? Does this mean we could play them as characters (kinda like Runequest, any creature can be a player character)?

It seems kinda odd putting what should be innate natural abilities/advantages as Feats. Maybe a new category called Advantages to handle such would be better? Or a Powers system ala M&M?

Yes I'd say they could gain levels. I'd also say that this system would make it much easier for a GM to allow someone to play a monster and have it be balanced.

For the second post, we're basically dealing with racial levels here, a concept Monte has done in Arcana Unearthed/Evolved.

We're just using feats in place of class abilities, cause that's how M20 works.

But think about a young lion as 1st level- she might have 1 level of size increase, claws, nightvision..

As she ages (gains levels), she'll get bigger, stronger more formidable etc.

Doing monsters this way just has so many advantages... so much easier to dial monsters up and down in power, easier to handle monsters/animals as followers and so forth.

Okay, great. Works for me. The Feats bit just seemed odd, but I'll get used to it. I really like the flexibility the system you've came up with offers.

So when can we expect to see Animals20 or Bestiary20 or at least a Modern Dispatch covering M20 critters?

Not only flexibility, but easy! Making those different horses was as easy as making a M20 NPC. Took me about 15 minutes each, as opposed to the 45 that creating monsters in d20 usually takes.

As for when you'll see monsters, I am working on the first Modern20 campaign, Fantasci, a science-fantasy game in the style of Japanese RPGs which will have monsters and spells included.
