Talents, what are they good for?

Absolutely nuthin!

I know what you're saying, "I love talents!"

Sure, we all do. But why do they need to be different from feats?

Can anyone tell me the difference between a talent and a feat? Besides just "they do different stuff"?

What's the balance? How many talents equal a feat balance wise?

According to the "Plus" feats from d20 Future, a feat is worth two talents.

Does anyone believe this? I actually think talents are a little BETTER than most feats myself (which makes those "Plus" feats whacked, but that's a story about another horse).

Anyway, as you can probably guess, talents are out. OUT!

Classes will give a feat every level, like True 20.

I haven't read True20, but it seems like a feat at every level would lead to bloat at higher levels.

"Let's see. I rolled a 10, but my BAB is +6, this feat gives me +1 in close range, this feat adds +2 if he's encumbered with a 2-handed weapon, and this feat lets me use my dodge bonus as attack bonus, but I can't use this feat other feat because he's wearing yellow."

Well, you have to keep in mind though that True 20 has no class abilities and no talents.

Everything is a feat.

Now I'm a big fan of talents as something special to a class but not as constricting as feats. That said, the True 20 version of talents as feats, given the simplification of the class system, seems like a fair idea. Access to more powerful talents could still be through a "path," just as already appears in most talent trees.

I'm with you, Charles; I don't see the point of Talents, nor do I see them as 2x1 vs. feats. They're just a class ability like any other.

About the only real benefit of differentiating talents from feats that I can see is limiting progress and access.

For example, Star Wars Saga has a talent, feat, talent, feat, progression, which means you can rightly assume a character can't get a talent that has one other talent as a pre-requisite until 3rd level (when the character gets a second talent) vs. 1st level, when the character has access to more than one feat.

That said, there are other ways to limit access than the talent/feat split.
