I never could really get into Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe, I think because it always compared poorly to LotRings. My wife, on the other hand, read the entire series when she was a girl, and so loves it, and thinks Tolkien fares the worse in comparison.
I wonder if, like comics, whatever we read when we are 8 becomes the standard.
I find the Narnia books to be very good, and I think one of the main reasons I prefer them (and RE Howard's Conan novels) to LOTR is that they dont overstay their welcome.
Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe is like 200 pages long. If it was twice that length, I would probably never finish it.
