Without a doubt the best era is the mid Roy Thomas run- crystalizing around Avengers #57, when you had a lineup of Cap, Black Panther, Vision,Hawkeye, Yellowjacket and Wasp.
Though I am also a huge fan of the George Perez era (141-162, 167-172, 194-196, 198-202).
Even though I came to love the Roy Thomas era later, when I think of the Avengers in my head, the images I see are usually drawn by George Perez and/or John Byrne (who was artist from 181-191).
But still, those issues where they added Yellowjacket, Black Panther and Vision to the team, eventually taking on Ultron, written by Roy Thomas, are some of the greatest comics done by anyone.
One last thing I'll point out is that I find the Avengers a fascinating book, and it's overall probably my favorite Marvel title, with so many interesting runs I feel bad singling a few out, but there ARE runs that really stand out in my mind.

Good thing it doesn't pay worth a damn, or you'd _really_ feel guilty. :)
Yeah, TWO gold-plated cadillacs would be a bit excessive.
I might have to read to the blind or something.
Nahhhhhh.
Just wondering - what do you consider to be the "best" era for the Avengers?
