Honestly, the old tan background was fine with me too, so if everyone dislikes the new look, speak up and I will revert to the old.

Wow you hate it? I spend so much time staring at computer screens that black backgrounds are soothing as heck.

Frankly, I spoke too soon. Most white on black websites I run into, I really can't stand and run the other way. Maybe they actually use gray on black or something, I dunno. But for some reason, yours doesn't bug me that much.
So, no worries ... and really, if I don't like it, I can fix it. If you haven't tried Readability, give it a peek.
I prefer the tan background. I see alot of white on black blogs (or slight variations of it). The tan made this blog look unique.
