The Golden Age of CRPGs

I've often spoke of the perception that pre-Unearthed Arcana D&D is considered the golden age of tabletop RPGs.

But here's something to consider: we might be living in the golden age of the computer RPG *right now*

Diablo II (2000) Metacritic 88
Final Fantasy X (2001) Metacritic 92
Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind (2002) Metacritic 89
Knights of the Old Republic (2003) Metacritic 93
World of Warcraft (2004) Metacritic 93
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (2006) Metacritic 94
Mass Effect (2007) Metacritic 89
Fallout 3 (2008) Metacritic 91
Dragon Age: Origins (2009) Metacritic 91
Mass Effect 2 (2010) Metacritic 95 (so far)

That's 10 great CRPGs in the last 11 years.

The funny thing about your list, is that with the exception of two outliers, you are citing the work of just two companies, Bethesda and Bioware.

I'm not familiar with Final Fantasy. JRPGs just aren't my bag, but I really have to quibble with the selection of Diablo II as an RPG in any but the loosest sense of the word.

It's basically an isometric action game, with a tiny bit of RPG trappings (customizable character stats, RPG-like equipment modifications).

There are no role-playing elements to speak of in the game, unlike the other titles in your list.

I'll leave it to others to decide whether WoW qualifies in that arena or not, but I say it makes the cut.

Well, I think there are two ways you can define a RPG, and since I've given this way too much thought, its going to be its own post, cause then more people will read it!

On the subject of it being two companies, that's true, but from that last, maybe two companies is all we need? Certainly *I* have been very satisfied with the decade Bethesda and Bioware have had.
